Below are my Aunt Betty’s words to me during a time I was condemning myself for something.
When we judge ourselves to be a certain way, there are people who tune into it and attack us. Repent of the heavy negative judgments on yourself. Turn it into a prayer instead. When we condemn ourselves, we open ourselves to condemnation. Get out of the habit of self-condemnation. Say the Our Father and really mean it. The worst thing for us would be if we could be perfect. There can be a deceit in us that salvation comes through being perfect.
There’s something in the Memorare Prayer that can help us get out of perfectionism. There’s a hope in this prayer that it’s only through God’s grace.
REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
