Betty: The Holy Spirit has it in right order. It’s not that you and I were smart and got it in the right order. But it’s by following the reason why we’re here which is to know, love and serve God. By actually following that, we wind up being happier and healthier and achieving our end. Does that makes sense? Because it’d be good for you to understand this, and to explain it to young people. As they seek to be the person God called them to be, they will find the point of their greatest happiness. It’s not an either/or. It’s a both/and. As you seek God’s good, God, who is good, will naturally bring about your good.
Some people think, “I really have to find who I am before I can be who I think God wants me to be.” No. As we try to be who we think God calls us to be, we will become the happy person and so on. It’s not the reverse. If we seek ourselves first, we’ll wind up behind an 8 ball. The culture we’re in is part of the problem. The culture we’re in tells everybody to seek their own good first. That’s why I was so disturbed watching these kids on the news last night. It’s like, “Oh my gosh. Here’s a whole generation of people who don’t know why they exist.” They were like a bunch of animals out there.
