AM: A young person I spoke with whose been away from the church told me she would like to get her apartment blessed. She’s not convinced that she needs to go back to church, but…
Betty: But see, she’s also got to realize that if she blesses her apartment, and she continues in the same unhealthy behavior, she hasn’t really solved the problem. Because the door is open to Satan through her unhealthy behavior.
She’s kind of acted like she’s God to God. And not, “She’s the creature toward the person we all need to help us, mainly He is called God. But we have a tendency to want to run to him when we need something. And he’s supposed to solve it. And then we go away and forget about Him again. There’s something wrong with that picture.
AM: Yeah, I don’t know quite how to say that to her.
Betty: Well, you have to watch manner, timing, and intensity. If it fits, put it in the hopper with Jesus and say, “Look, Lord, I’ll need your help if It’s time for her to look at her relationship with you.”
Especially the way things are nowadays, in life, you really do need God’s help. Because crazy problems like what she’s running into, they go on through life. And so, you turn to the Lord and say, “Help.” And then, he in turn helps you to learn how to get through that problem. But you need to have a relationship with him. He’s not you just a magic box that you can turn to just when you need it.
AM: Yeah, and I think things go smooth enough for her where she doesn’t need Him in her mind.
Betty: Yeah. When you’re young, you think you’ve got it all conquered. But as life goes on, you get more real and realize life is a real challenge, and there are all kinds of people out there. You need to learn how to handle stuff that you never thought of, but in life you run into it.
You can pray and turn to God and hold the question up to Him, and say, “Teach me.” See, that’s the humble, contrite spirit the Lord said he will not despise. Because that’s the right attitude toward God.
