AM: People don’t get your goat so much anymore.
Betty: Well, they still do, some of them. But the fact is, that’s the freedom. Jesus said, “You shall learn the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
AM: So, the truth that you learn is about the hook in you? And that’s what sets you free as you embrace it? How do you work through it? So, for example, you acknowledge that we’re dealing with the stuff in the family. But how do you get free of it?
Betty: It wouldn’t be so irritating to you if you didn’t have it inside you.
AM: So, how do I get free?
Betty: You continue to give Jesus permission, and you go through the humiliation of seeing where it’s in you.
AM: That’s what it is? It’s the process of the humiliation of seeing where it’s in yourself?
Betty: It will be a transformation as you enter into the truth that, “Oh my gosh. I’m blaming them for the irritation. But a lot of that stuff is in me.”
AM: So, does Jesus allow it to come up more in us when we’re reacting to someone? Because then we’ll go to prayer where we will see it in ourselves. And that will be humiliating, so then we’ll say, “But for the grace of God there go I,” and we won’t judge them anymore.”
Betty: You don’t feel the great need to throw the blame on them. That’s why I told you to read that book, It’s not my Fault. It’s a very good book, because the author shows nitty gritty examples of how we’re caught. And there’s the part that we all have. It’s like, “Oh my gosh. When is it ever going to end?” Well, it’s when we go to Jesus. We’re always sinners.
Is there someone you are irritated with that has a similar trait to what you dislike about yourself. Give Jesus permission to help you, and go through the humiliation of seeing where it’s in you.
