IT’S A DEATH TO SELF IN ORDER TO GET RID OF A BAD TRAIT

AM: You said we need to do our part. What would you say my part is in the situation where I find myself fuming inside at a referee? What would you do if that was you? How can I keep that anger from growing?

Betty: Well, you’re recognizing it as a part of you that’s driven from crazy motives inside. So, when you feel yourself in this driven place, let that be like, “Uh oh. This is not a good place.” So, there’s where renunciation comes in. When you feel yourself being driven, it’s the time to say, “Woah.” And in your case, it might be to mortify yourself and not go screaming out or whatever this drive is in you. You recognize, “I need God’s help.” So, you turn it, and call on him. Because that drive has an energy and a strength And we can often feel when what we’re doing is starting to come from a driven place. That’s always a bad sign. So, you need to close the door, sit yourself down, and this sounds crazy, but give to the Lord what’s happening out there. If the umpire is out of it, it’s the case where God’s will is being allowed.

What you do is if you feel yourself being pushed and driven, recognize that’s a danger place. So, then you have to deliberately like sit down and, “Okay Lord,” and give the umpire who just made a fool of himself over to God. Give over the fact that you were really right and the umpire wasn’t. It’s a death to self in order to get rid of that driven fan need.

Is there any place inside of you that’s angry about what the Lord is allowing to happen in your life? Choose to mortify yourself rather than go into complaining. See the situation as a case where God’s will is being allowed.
